State Capitol. St. Paul.

This black-and-white postcard has a large bottom border for a message because the back was designated as for the address only.

St. Paul. New State Capitol
Antique postcard from the private collection of Valerie Mockaitis. Published by Raphael Tuck & Sons circa 1905. Printed in Germany.

The horse-drawn vehicles and the pedestrians were probably added by the artist, as was the unusual sky.

This state capitol was Minnesota's first. It was built in 1853, but was inadequate and underwent major remodeling and expansion in 1872 and again in 1878.

Sketch published in 1875 in Harper's Weekly. Source: Minnesota Historical Society.

The first state capitol is shown in this sketch after the major 1872 remodel. Besides adding a wing, the dome and drum were removed and replaced with the large cupola. This capitol was remodeled again in 1878.

Zimmerman's Artistic Minnesota Views
Stereoscopic card circa 1885.

Minnesota's second capitol, pictured here, was built in the same location as the first. It opened in 1883 and was used for only 10 years before the current capitol was considered a necessity and in the planning stages. This building was in public use until 1937, and then it was torn down.

Minnesota State Capitol. St. Paul, Minn.
Antique, embossed postcard published circa 1905 by S. Langsdorf & Co. Publishing, New York, N. Y. Made in Germany.

There is no reason for the stone dome of this capitol to be shown as green in this view other than artistic misinterpretation.

State Capitol, St. Paul, Minn.

Antique postcard. Copyright 1908 by Williamson-Haffner Co., Denver.

The verse reads:

Minnesota, gem of the north,
Both fields and forests tell thy worth.
Our love and praises thou dost win,
Emblem dear is the moccasin.

The Minnesota State Capitol. St. Paul, Minn.
Antique postcard published circa 1905 by Raphael Tuck & Sons. Printed in England.

Here the stone dome is the right color. The difference between this dome and the green one in the view above is interesting since the cards were made from the same photo and include some of the same artwork.
