Augusta, Me. State Capitol
Antique postcard from the private collection of Valerie Mockaitis. Published circa 1908 by the Hugh C. Leighton Co, Manufacturers, Portland ME., U.S.A. Printed in Germany.

This capitol, as pictured here, was originally designed and built from 1828 to 1832. When it was extensively remodeled in 1910, the building was torn down except for the front and rear walls and rebuilt much larger.

Maine State Capitol
Drawing from Maine Historical Society. Internet publication by the Library of Congress.

This drawing shows the results of the extensive remodeling started in 1910 as mentioned with the antique postcard shown above. The larger building also has a taller drum and new dome. The portico is the only major feature that remained the same.

Augusta, Maine. State Capitol.
Antique postcard published circa 1915.

This view of the enlarged state capitol has the sky embellished with pink over the horizon and a few clouds. This was a very popular addition for the artists to make at the time.

Augusta, Me. State Capitol.
Antique postcard published circa 1910.

Winter views often allow more of the capitol to be seen through leafless trees. This one of the original building sets an unusual mood with so much of the grounds covered in patchy snow.

The Maine State Capitol. Augusta, Me.
Antique postcard published circa 1905 by Raphael Tuck & Sons. Printed in England.

This artistic view is typical of a Tuck. In this series of state capitol cards, most of them have added pedestrians, as are seen here.

Maine State Capitol. Augusta, Me.
Antique, embossed postcard published circa 1905 by S. Langsdorf & Co. Publishing, New York, N.Y. Made in Germany.

While Tuck fancied white dresses on the ladies in the view above, this publisher used the same artwork and gave the clothing more color.

This Undivided Back postcard has a wide border on the front for a message, since the back is reserved for the addressee information only. The angle gives an unusual view of the building.
